To say I didn’t have a traditional upbringing is an understatement. I learned English from watching “The Monty Pythons” and knew every single line from “The Fawlty Towers” by heart. Was it any wonder that while everyone else was watching “Growing Pains” and “The Cosby Show,” I was tuning into “The Young Ones?” In my opinion, this Britcom’s got it all: Violent slapstick, surrealism, puppets, and best of all, musical guests like Madness and Motorhead! This is my homage to a part of my formative years!
(From right to left) The students of Scumbag College: Neil, the long suffering hippie; Rik, the snotty anarchist/poet obsessed with Cliff Richards; Vyvyan, the violent punk rocker; Mike, the suave and tiny Don Juan of North London; and SPG (Special Patrol Group), Vyv’s pet hamster.
A close up of SPG.
“Never before had violence of such degree, squalor, physical foulness, blood, sex and death, all been used as such a regular part of a flagship comedy programme.” -BBC
Too bad there aren’t many shows like this out there!

With a Scottish hamster variously called “Special Patrol Group” or “Cliff Richard”, how could you possibly go wrong? And Bacon Sandwich, “the Pig Ferret”.
Ooooh, you got me a present! It’s a telescope! And it’s got a mouse inside of it!!!”
Effin’ brilliant show!

The detail you’ve put into these is just brilliant. I’ve quoted this show for the past 25 years with my sister and best friend and it never ages, just become more treasured and appreciated. Excellent work!

I love the Young Ones!!!! Used to get blazed and watch it for hours with my mates, “back in the day”. Laughed our bloody arses off! Vyvian was my favorite, with Neil as a close second. The garden gnome should also be represented with a nesting doll, in my opinion. Crucial character of mirth. 🙂 nice job. ❤

Love It!!! I too was reared on britcoms!!! And my kids of 5 & 7 love The Young Ones and Black Adder….some may say they are a little too young for it but we all watch together and can make sense of the strange bits…They are in general loads less offensive than most of the s@#t on TV now…I have an idea How about the AB FAB crew????
Belle said:
